Airbus, Boeing, Embraer -  deliveries and orders in the second quarter of 2021 (2Q21)


The economy in the aeronautical industry is slowly picking up based on the results of deliveries and orders from the three largest commercial aircraft manufacturers (Airbus, Boeing and Embraer) in the second quarter. All this with the advance of vaccines underway around the world and the drop in deaths from the pandemic, in some countries a large part of the population has already taken the second dose of the vaccine. It is noteworthy that the recovery is slow and gradual, but that it is already possible to see improvements with positive results in the aviation and travel sector.


Including the three largest manufacturers (Airbus, Boeing and Embraer), a total of 265 aircraft were delivered (144 narrowbody and 57 widebody), an increase in 52 aircraft deliveries compared to the first quarter of the year and 473 orders in this second quarter (431 narrowbody and 45 widebody) an increase of 147 aircraft on order compared to the first quarter of the year.

 

During the second quarter of 2021, the most delivered narrowbody aircraft (narrow-body or single-aisle) was the Airbus A320neo with a total of 68 deliveries, while the most delivered widebody (wide-body or double-aisle) aircraft was the Airbus A350-900XWB with 18 deliveries.

 

As for orders, in 2Q2021, together with the three largest manufacturers, there were a total of 473 aircraft (431 narrowbody and 37 widebody). The narrowbody aircraft most ordered in the period was the Boeing 737 MAX 10, becoming the biggest order of the MAX 10 version so far after the MAX's operational resumption. The most ordered widebody was the Boeing 767-300F freighter with 18 orders.

During 2Q2021, Airbus delivered a total of 172 commercial aircraft (144 narrowbody and 28 widebody), an increase of 47 aircraft delivered compared to the previous quarter over the year. Total orders were 126 aircraft (120 narrowbody and 6 widebody), an increase of 87 aircraft ordered compared to the previous quarter.

 

The A320neo and A350-900 XWB continued to lead as the most delivered aircraft for the second quarter of the consecutive year and so far the most delivered aircraft for the year 2021.

The Airbus A320neo aircraft was the most delivered in the second quarter with an increase of 9 aircraft delivered compared to the first quarter, a total of 68 deliveries in the second quarter. The widebody aircraft most delivered by the European manufacturer was the A350-900XWB with double deliveries over the quarter with 18 deliveries as mentioned at the beginning of this publication.

 

As for orders, the Airbus A321neo was the narrowbody most ordered by the European manufacturer with 104 orders. Airbus's most ordered widebody was the A350-900 XWB with 5 orders.

The European manufacturer remains in the lead during the first half of 2021 with a total of 297 deliveries, 165 orders and a large number of orders in a total of 6,925 aircraft.

 

According to DSM Forecast International, the results were above analysts' expectations, reflecting higher-than-expected aircraft deliveries, but also helped by the results of an ongoing restructuring program.

 

Prior to the pandemic, Airbus had targeted a 5 percent rate increase from A320 to 63 jets per month starting in 2021, and was also discussing a further increase with its supply chain that could have pushed the production rate to as high as 67 aircraft per month, or 804 per year, by 2023. This would put the company within reach of a total of 1,000 jet deliveries per year. Those plans have now been shelved. On January 21, 2021, Airbus released an updated production rate plan and now expects to increase production of the A320 from the current rate of 40 per month to 43 in the third quarter and 45 in the fourth quarter of 2021. This represents a further increase slower than previously forecast 47 aircraft per month from July. The monthly production rate of the A220 has been increased from four to five aircraft per month by the end of the first quarter of 2021. Widebody production rates will remain at current levels, with monthly production rates of around five and two for the A350 and A330, respectively.

 

Boeing, order leader in the first half of 2021

 

The MAX family of aircraft has gained the confidence of operators after improvements made by the American manufacturer Boeing. With the resumption of operations of the MAX family planes in November 2020, Boeing in the second quarter of 2021 set a new order record in the period.

 

Boeing saw an increase of 35 orders with a total ordering of 317 aircraft (281 narrowbody and 36 widebody). Deliveries increased by 2 more aircraft during the second quarter of 2021 compared to the first quarter of the year, a total of 79 aircraft deliveries (50 narrowbody and 29 widebody).

 

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was the manufacturer's most delivered narrowbody aircraft in the second quarter of 2021 with 84 aircraft, an increase of 45 aircraft for the MAX 8 version compared to the previous quarter over the same year. The widebody most delivered in 2Q2021 by Boeing was the Boeing 767-300F freighter with 18 aircraft.

According to Boeing, the 737 program is currently producing at a low rate and continues to expect to gradually increase production to 31 per month in early 2022 with further gradual increases to match market demand. Boeing will continue to evaluate the production rate plan as it monitors the market environment and engages in discussions with customers.

 

During the second quarter the MAX Family set a new order record, United Airlines placed an order for 200 MAX aircraft (50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 150 Boeing 737 MAX 10), the order became the largest order for the version of the MAX 10, as it did during the first quarter with a record orders placed for the MAX 7 by Southwest Airlines after the operational resumption of the MAX family of aircraft

 

A curious factor was the number of orders for cargo aircraft over the second quarter. With the pandemic, the e-commerce sector together with the air cargo sector made companies such as: Fedex, Lufthansa Cargo, Silk Way West, Qatar Cargo and another operator in secrecy – boosting orders for Boeing 767F and Boeing 777F cargo aircraft .

Boeing closed the first half of 2021 as the largest manufacturer with the most orders, a total of 599 aircraft. 434 more aircraft on order than its competitor Airbus, which obtained a total of 165 aircraft on order in the same semester.

 

Even with this large number of orders in the first half of 2021, Boeing has a total of 4,166 aircraft orders, a lower number than its competitor Airbus which has 6,925 order orders.

 

The Brazilian Embraer

 

Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, according to its official statement with Investors, delivered a total of 22 jets in the second quarter of 2021, including fourteen commercial jets and twenty executive jets.

 

The new E195-E2 was the most delivered in the period with a total of 7 deliveries. One more compared to the first quarter of 2021.

 

During the second quarter of 2021, Swiss airline Helvetic Airways received the first of four new E195-E2 aircraft. Helvetic has ordered 12 E-Jets E2 to begin fleet renewal: eight E190-E2 aircraft (already in service) and four E195-E2 (conversions from the original E190-E2 order), plus purchase rights for a further 12 aircraft additional.

Another relevant factor was the last delivery of the Embraer 170 aircraft. The Embraer 170 had a total portfolio of 171 aircraft since its launch.

 

Embraer's total orders ended the second quarter of 2021 with 66 more commercial aircraft compared to the first quarter of 2021.

 

Embraer ended the first half of 2021 with 306 orders for commercial aircraft (141 Embraer 175, 3 Embraer 190, 5 Embraer 195-E2 and 157 Embraer 195-E2).

 

The current backlog includes the contract for 30 E195-E2 aircraft from Porter Airlines, Canada, which was initially reported as an “undisclosed” customer on April 29, and was unveiled to the market on July 12th.
